Turmeric for dogs
Turmeric is delicious spice that has a wide range of powerful healing and health benefits for both dogs and people. It's been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and now even western medicine is studying it's healing powers.
Also known as Golden Spice, turmeric contains a compound called curcumin. This is the bright orange part of turmeric that provides it's amazing health benefits. Be careful though, it's also the bit that stains your hands and clothes!
Here are some of the ways that turmeric can help your dog.
The recommended dosage is 35mg (dried) per kg of body weight. This works out to 1/4 teaspoon per day for a 10kg dog, or 3/4 teaspoon of fresh grated turmeric.
We use fresh, locally sourced and organic turmeric in every Whoa Nelly! recipe because of these amazing health benefits (we eat lots at home too). We lacto-ferment it with black pepper and other spices and combined with the coconut oil and natural fats in our food it is easily absorbed by your dog. It really is amazing!
Even if you're not feeding Whoa Nelly! it's worth including some turmeric in your dogs diet. Especially if they suffer from allergies or skin problems. Just be sure to add a small amount of black pepper and coconut oil to make it more effective. You dog will thank you for it!
Please note that if your dog is on medication, is having surgery, or is pregnant or lactating, consult your vet before feeding.
