How To Transition Your Dog To Raw Food

Congratulations on making a healthy change for your dog! Feeding a high quality, properly formulated raw diet is absolutely the best thing that you can do for your pup’s health and longevity.

It’s important to take your time when transitioning to a new diet so that your dog’s digestive system has time to adjust. This is especially true if they have eaten a predominantly dry food diet - it can take some time for their belly to adjust to fresh food, and there is often a detoxification process which also happens.

Here is how we recommend transitioning to Whoa Nelly! (or any new diet) ☺️

Kibble to Whoa Nelly!

If your dog has not eaten raw food before, we recommend taking 10 days to make the transition. Start with just a small amount - a spoon or snack amount, just so they can get a taste for it. You then gently increase the amount of raw over the course of the 10 days.

Day 1:
Spoon or small snack amount

Days 2-3:
25% Whoa Nelly! + 75 % Kibble

Days 4-6:
50% Whoa Nelly! + 50 % Kibble

Days 7-10:
75% Whoa Nelly! + 25 % Kibble

Well done - you are now feeding an amazing raw food diet!

Raw to Whoa Nelly!

If you dog is currently eating raw food, they are likely to be able to transition a bit faster. We recommend taking around week to make this transition.

Days 1-2:
25% Whoa Nelly! + 75 % Old Raw

Days 3-4:
50% Whoa Nelly! + 50 % Old Raw

Days 5-7:
75% Whoa Nelly! + 25 % Old Raw

Puppies

Puppies are quite resilient! Because their digestive system is still developing they can make the change quite rapidly - if you want. You can start feeding raw immediately after weaning, or you can take a week to transition as described about.

If you are unsure, we recommend taking a week to transition to minimise any stress on their digestive system.

Fussy dogs

If your dog is fussy, it’s ok! Know that you are making a positive change for their wellbeing and stick with a plan to transition them to their new amazing diet.

We have a very good track record with fussy pups loving our food, but if yours doesn’t straight away, here are some tips:

  • Stop all treats, table scraps and everything else.

  • Only offer the food you want your dog to eat, at the time you want them to eat it.

  • Take any uneaten food away after 5 minutes (you can put it back in the fridge).

  • No other food except at mealtime. Try again tomorrow - be strong!

What to expect during transition

As you would expect, changes in diet also causes changes in digestion. You may notice some mucus and changes in poo quality, this is very common and should stop in a week or two. There may also be some hair shedding - don’t worry, it will quickly be replaced by shiny new hair!

Over time your dog should be making small, firm healthy poos - this is when you know you dog’s digestive system has fully transitioned to their beautiful new raw diet.
