Why Does My Dog Sneeze?

Did you know that dogs sneeze to communicate? 🤧

A 2017 study showed that African wild dogs communicate, and actually use sneezing to make decisions. The researchers found that the dogs used sneezing like a vote, and that they decide what the group does by having a “sneeze vote”.

Quite extraordinary!

At home, dogs also use sneezes to communicate. It’s often called “play sneezing”, and is a behaviour used to signal that they are playing and not in conflict.

Dogs can sneeze to show that they are happy, excited, or being submissive. It’s a way for dogs to express themselves, just like barking or wagging their tail. Play sneezing is more common in smaller breeds, but dogs of all sizes do it (Nelly included).

Nasal Irritation

The less fun reason your dog may be sneezing is due to a nose irritation - especially after being in the garden. Grass, dust, pollen, dirt, air freshener, perfume or hairspray can all cause your dog to sneeze. By sneezing, your dog is simply trying to get rid of the irritant out of their nose

Dental problems can also cause your dog to sneeze. Damaged teeth, tumours in the mouth or gum disease can all lead to sneezing as a symptom.

When should I be worried about sneezing?

While most sneezes are completely harmless, there are a few cases that it’s worth getting your vet to have a look.

If the sneezing is uncontrollable our persistent, there may be an issue. And if there is anything in their nose, or a coloured discharge, it’s probably worth a trip to the vet to investigate 🐾
